Nearby Trail Systems
Explore awesome trails in nearby communities.
While Durango is lucky to have incredible trail networks, we are even luckier that the nearby region has awesome trail systems with a wide variety of terrain within 60 miles of downtown. Some of the systems are open almost year-round on many years.
From the best-known system in Cortez’s Phil’s World and the legendary Road Apple trails down in Farmington to the developing network in Silverton the area has plenty to offer. If there is a chance you could ever get complacent with the Durango in-town and mid/high-country riding, these other areas have a wide variety of terrain from flowy, high desert rollers to technical/rocky outcroppings and exhilarating descents. Some also offer somewhat easier terrain (less climbing) than Durango’s minimal offerings.
Some of the systems are directional which is nice not having to worry about oncoming trail traffic. If not, then we’ll do our best to give the most common loops and directions of travel to make the most of your ride.
As with any of the Durango trail systems, given the area’s high clay soil content these trails are a no-go when wet. If you leave a track, go back! Please be aware of the weather before heading out and don’t ride if very recent or current rain. Riding wet trails here causes major damage to trails not to mention you will end up carrying your bike as our mud just builds upon itself on tires (and shoes) and they will eventually stop rolling. Not all of the systems have regular reporting on trail conditions, but some do, and links will be posted in the details of each.
Please be kind to all trail users, follow rules of the trail and road, and leave no trace (except for smiles). Do not build or follow non-system trails, it makes the process much more difficult to get new open space and trails approved.
