Should Cyclists be Using Peptides? It’s all the Rage
Brought to you by Pedal Durango and Lola’s Restaurant
What Are Peptides?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act like signaling molecules in the body. Some are prescribed medically; others are sold online or through “anti-aging” or performance clinics.
Common examples athletes talk about:
BPC-157 – marketed for injury recovery
TB-500 – promoted for tissue repair
CJC-1295 – stimulates growth hormone
Ipamorelin – also stimulates growth hormone
IGF-1 – muscle growth and recovery
🚴 For Cyclists Specifically
1️⃣ Performance Enhancement
Most growth-hormone–related peptides are on the WADA banned list. If you race (even local amateur events), this is a major issue.
They may:
Increase lean mass slightly
Improve recovery in theory
But:
Evidence in endurance athletes is limited
Gains are often overstated
You risk hormone imbalance
2️⃣ Injury Recovery
This is why many masters cyclists get interested.
Some peptides are marketed for:
Tendon healing
Ligament repair
Reduced inflammation
Reality:
Human clinical data is thin
Many products are unregulated
Dosing is not standardized
Quality control is questionable
If you’re dealing with chronic tendon issues (common in cyclists), structured rehab, nutrition, sleep, and progressive loading usually outperform experimental peptides.
3️⃣ Fat Loss
Since you’re an interval rider aiming to lose ~20 lbs, peptides are often pitched as fat-loss shortcuts.
Growth hormone–related peptides:
May increase lipolysis slightly
Often increase water retention
Can raise blood sugar
For fat loss, peptides are far less effective than:
Slight caloric deficit
Zone 2 volume
High-quality sleep
Protein at 0.7–1g per lb bodyweight
⚠️ Risks
Hormonal suppression or imbalance
Insulin resistance
Elevated cortisol
Unknown long-term safety
Legal/regulatory issues
Contamination from gray-market suppliers
💡 Who might consider them?
Under physician supervision
Diagnosed growth hormone deficiency
Clinical research settings
Not typically healthy recreational cyclists.
My Honest Take (for someone like you)
As an intermediate interval rider trying to drop 20 pounds, peptides are likely:
