Durango riders continue to show the world just how good they really are. Christopher Blevins is off to a scorching start winning 5 of 6 UCI World Cup Events to start the season. Oh, and the one he did not win he finished second! Right now he is ranked the number one mountain biker on the tour! Quinn Simmons just won the Elite National Road Race Championship and will be taking his National Champion Jersey to Europe to continue his racing season. And just to add the cherry to the Durango desert, Cobe Freeburn won his second straight Iron Horse Bicycle Classic on the road and both in both categories of Road and Mountain Biking!
Please join Pedal Durango in congratulating our super heroes on their success and continued success for the cycling season!
“I Ride All the Time but I Just Do Not Seem to Improve My Times”
Interval Training is one of the best ways that you can increase your level of fitness and overall conditioning, but you are new to how best to get started. Check out the recommendations below to a happier, healthier, and faster you!
Brought to you by Pedal Durango and our business partners Leland House and Lola’s
Beginner (new to cycling or interval training):
1–2 times per week
Focus on shorter intervals (e.g., 30 seconds to 2 minutes) with ample recovery time.
Combine with steady-state rides to build aerobic endurance.
Intermediate (regular rider, some experience with intervals):
2–3 times per week
Mix different types of intervals: short sprints (30s–1min), VO2 max (2–5 min), and threshold efforts (8–20 min).
Make sure you allow for recovery days or easy rides in between.
Advanced/Competitive cyclists:
3–4 times per week, max
Highly structured workouts targeting specific systems (anaerobic, VO2 max, lactate threshold).
Prioritize quality over quantity — overtraining reduces gains and increases injury risk.
Key Principles:
Rest is critical: Interval training stresses your body — you get stronger when you recover.
Avoid back-to-back interval days unless you’re doing a training camp or block-style training.
Watch for signs of overtraining: poor sleep, declining performance, mood changes.
Of course ALWAYS check with your medical provider before starting any exercise program.
NEW TRAIL OPENS!
Durango Mesa Connector Trail Opens
The talk of the town in recent weeks has been the new trail up at Durango Mesa Park. The Durango Mesa Connector trail starts from the hub of the demonstration trails in the Horse Gulch Meadow and traverses over to the Crites/Sidewinder/Carbon Junction intersection. It opens up a different route to get over to the Grandview Trails without going over Telegraph and also provides riders starting at Three Springs/Spur Line an easier route to get to town without climbing the backside of Telegraph. If that isn’t enough of a highlight, by the end of the month a new zone of trails will open up that include a dedicated uphill trail and three downhill only trails with green, blue and black designations. For more information on what is going on up at Durango Mesa Park, head to the websitehttps://durangomesapark.org and/or give them a follow on Instagram and Facebook.
