Welcome to the Pedal Durango year end newsletter. Even though it is almost officially winter it does not mean that cycling stops. In this edition we will share with you how to stay fit during the winter, what cycling events are on the calendar, which events to put on your calendar. Be sure and read through the entire newsletter as there is a lot of information inside! But first, Dave and Rick would like to thank all of you for supporting Pedal Durango this past year. Although we haven’t be operational for quite a year your support has been overwhelming, and we look forward to seeing what the future holds in store for the Durango Cycling community. Season’s Blessings to you all. We hope you have a great holiday season.

Winter Training Tips: Sponsored by our partners at Leland House / Lola’s
Mix up your winter training program to maintain your fitness and prevent boredom.
Here are some tips to help you through the coming monthsWinter can present challenges for cyclists due to colder temperatures, shorter days, and inclement weather. However, it’s also an opportunity to focus on specific aspects of training and build a strong foundation for the upcoming cycling season. Here are some suggestions for effective winter training
Indoor Training:
Smart Trainers: Invest in a smart trainer that allows you to connect to cycling apps like Zwift, TrainerRoad, or Sufferfest. These apps offer structured workouts, virtual group rides, and races.
Structured Workouts: Follow a structured training plan that includes a mix of endurance, interval, and strength workouts. Many online platforms provide pre-designed plans based on your fitness level and goals.
Strength Training:
Off-Bike Exercises: Include strength training to improve your overall fitness and prevent injury. Focus on exercises that target the core, legs, and upper body.
Core Stability: A strong core is essential for efficient cycling. Incorporate exercises like planks, Russian twists, and leg raises into your routine.
Endurance Rides:
Bundle Up: On milder winter days, venture outside for longer rides to build and maintain your aerobic base. Dress in layers to stay warm and protect yourself from the elements.
Fat Biking: If you have access to a fat bike, it can be a fun way to continue outdoor riding on snowy trails.
Interval Training:
High-Intensity Intervals: Perform high-intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions to improve cardiovascular fitness and increase power. This can be done indoors on a trainer or outdoors if conditions permit.
Flexibility and Mobility:
Yoga or Stretching: Use the winter months to improve flexibility and mobility. Incorporate yoga or stretching exercises into your routine to enhance recovery and reduce the risk of injury.
Cross-Training:
Other Cardio Activities: Consider cross-training with activities like running, swimming, or cross-country skiing to maintain cardiovascular fitness while giving your cycling muscles a break.
Nutrition and Hydration:
Hydrate Adequately: Even in colder weather, it’s important to stay hydrated. Indoor heating can be dehydrating, so be conscious of your fluid intake.
Nutrition: Pay attention to your nutrition, ensuring you’re fueling your body with the right nutrients to support your training and recovery.
Rest and Recovery:
Adequate Rest: Allow for proper rest and recovery between hard workouts. Quality sleep is crucial for overall performance and well-being.
Remember to listen to your body and adjust your training plan based on how you feel. Winter training provides an opportunity to work on weaknesses, build strength, and set a solid foundation for the cycling season ahead.
