So Your Bike Got Stolen – Now What?
Bicycle thefts are on the rise. Cyclists are spending more and more on their bikes, usually more than their car is worth! You just went in for a minute to get your coffee and when you came out your expensive bike got lifted. Now what do you do? According to Jay Hwang, Insurance Broker at State Farm Insurancethere are several steps you need to take. After you have cried yourself out the first thing you need to do is immediately file a police report. You will need that police report to file any insurance claim. Once the you have the report you need to file a claim with your insurance carrier. To file a claim you need the following information:
Make, model and year of your bicycle, and the bikes serial number
Be sure that you also include your frame composition
Make sure you include your components and wheel set
Insurance will not cover your accessories that are not permanently attached to your bike. Sorry Garmin and Wahoo!
Insurance will cover any accessories that are permanently attached to your bike, i.e. fenders
Take detailed pictures of your bike for evidence
If you get a replacement you can upgrade your ride but the difference in cost will be your responsibility
Your homeowners insurance will cover the loss of your bike however many times your deductible may exceed the cost of your bike. If you have renters insurance you may be better off as deductibles are not as high which makes it easier to recover your cost.
Consider an alternative called a Personal Articles Policy. You pick the dollar limit of coverage. This type of policy has a zero deductible and will cover breakage! Say you forget that your bike is on your roof and you pull into a garage. Renters and Homeowners coverage will not cover breakage but the Personal Articles Policy will. Cost may vary per geographic location.
Always make sure that you have adequate coverage, and that your premiums are up to date!
